Meriwether Lewis graduated from Washington and Lee University (Liberty Hall) in 1793.  He joined the Virginia Militia and was commissioned an officer in the U.S. Army in 1795.  He rose to the rank of Captain and ended his service in 1801.  In 1803, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark were chosen by President Thomas Jefferson to lead the Corps of Discovery and the exploration of the Louisiana Territory.

He died while traveling on The Natchez Trace from an apparent suicide in 1809.

★★★★★

"The cabins at Southland Trace are great for a large family or a group visiting Lexington. The Jackson cabin was perfect for four adult couples attending a class reunion. The common room and kitchen are great for socializing. Bedrooms were roomy and quiet. The location was a very short drive from campus and town and there is plenty of parking right outside the door. Check in and out went smoothly and communication with our host beforehand was great. We would definitely return."
